ABOUT PRF
Rainfall Index Program
The Pasture, Rangeland & Forage (PRF) Insurance Program provides coverage for acres used for grazing or hay production, helping protect the foundation of your livestock operation.
PRF is designed to offset the financial impact of reduced forage availability caused by below-average rainfall. When moisture is limited, producers often face higher feed costs, herd reductions, or other operational adjustments—this coverage helps manage that risk.
Rather than measuring individual production losses, PRF uses a Rainfall Index to track precipitation levels within your area. Coverage is based on this index, not on actual yields or forage harvested, providing a straightforward and objective approach to protecting your operation.
How it Works
Customizable Coverage: Adjust your protection level using a productivity factor ranging from 60% to 150%
PRF coverage is available across most of the United States and is based entirely on a Rainfall Index, which measures precipitation levels within your area. Rather than relying on individual farm measurements, this program uses data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to evaluate rainfall across a larger grid (approximately 17 x 17 miles).
The Sales Closing Date for PRF is December 1st.
Customizable Coverage: Adjust your protection level using a productivity factor ranging from 60% to 150%
With PRF, you select specific timeframes—called index intervals—when rainfall is most critical to your operation. These intervals are two-month periods, and you must choose at least two throughout the year.
If rainfall within your selected grid and intervals falls below your chosen coverage level (known as the trigger index), you may receive an indemnity payment.
